Week Aotearoa

Five ways to connect. One stronger community.

The five pillars Council toolkit

What it is

A week for councils and their communities

Local Government Week Aotearoa is a nationwide opportunity for councils to strengthen understanding, build trust and connect communities with the people and services that shape everyday life.

It helps communities discover what their kaunihera (council) does, experience the services and places that support everyday life, meet the people behind the mahi, have their say, and imagine the future they want to help create.

One activity, one story, or one digital piece using #LGWEEKNZ is enough to take part.

Illustrated group labelled children and young people, families and whānau, older people, disabled people, Māori communities, culturally diverse communities, and people who don’t usually engage.

The framework

The five pillars

The week is built around five pillars that take a community on a journey through local government. Together they are a simple framework. Most activities connect with more than one pillar.

  1. Te Kimi Ara Explore Council Discover what council does and why it matters.
  2. Wheako Kaunihera Experience Council See council in action.
  3. Whanaungatanga Meet Council Connect with the people behind the mahi.
  4. Whakapuaki Whakaaro Have Your Say Support meaningful community participation.
  5. Te Puāwaitanga Future Imagine what is possible.
